SPJ Houston thanks our niche media panelists

The SPJ Houston chapter would like to thank the panelists of our “Where and the Jobs in Journalism” discussion panel that took place Sept. 18 on the University of Houston campus. We hope they learned as much as the audience did.

Pictured, from left, are Liz Bassett, publication coordinator for the Institute for Cancer Care Innovation at MD Anderson Cancer Center; Mark Passwaters, energy reporter at SNL Energy & managing editor of AggieYell.com; Arie Wilson Passwaters, web editor at Rice University; Lindsay Peyton, freelance writer and owner of Cadence Enterprise; and Terry Wade, Houston bureau chief for Reuters.

Panelists shared their expertise on what niche journalism is, why it is a growing segment of the media, what the benefits are from working at a niche publication, the skills all journalists have and can use to their benefit and how to become a better journalist, as well as advice to students who are working toward a journalism degree on how they can separate themselves from their peers.
