The SPJ Houston Pro Chapter invites you take an excursion to Galveston July 20 & join us for a day of “Fun in the Sun.” Take part in one or all three of the activities and feel free to bring along your family (kiddos included) and friends. • Tram Tour (9 a.m.)
Meet in front of the entrance to the Pleasure Pier at the intersection of 25th and Seawall Boulevard. Paid parking available the Fish Tales restaurant (2502 Seawall Blvd. across from the Pleasure Pier). Free parking along the Seawall.
Enjoy a 1.5-hour historic tour of Galveston in open-air tram. Tour starts at 9:30 a.m. Payment due upon boarding.
Cost: Adults $10, children 4-12yo $5, children 3 & younger are free
• Galveston County Daily News tour (11:30 a.m.)
Heber Taylor, editor of the Galveston County Daily News, will give us a tour of the physical plant and answer questions about the paper’s role in shaping Galveston’s future.
• Lunch (Noon): Boxed lunch and soft drinks in GDN conference room. Lunch provider TBD.
Cost: $15 to be paid in advance.
• Luncheon panel discussion (12:30 p.m.)
Panelists will discuss Galveston’s past, present and future with a focus on Hurricane Ike, its aftermath and steps the city has taken to recover from Ike and deal with storms in the future.
Panelists include Shrub Kempner, Galveston history buff & raconteur; Mark Henry, Galveston County judge; and Heber Taylor, Galveston County Daily News editor.
• Tour Fire Station #4 (2 p.m.)
We will Tour Fire Station #4 at Scholes International Airport. The station is a state-of-the-art facility that was completely rebuilt after Hurricane Ike using Community Development Block Grant disaster funds and was designed to meet the needs of the community, as well as emergencies specific to air traffic. The almost 14,000-square-foot facility serves as the primary fire and rescue support for island residents and the nearby airport.
• Q & A session (2:30 p.m.)
Attendees will have a chance to get their questions answered during a Q & A session with speakers representing city of Galveston. Speakers TBA.
• Depart Galveston (4:00 p.m.)
The day’s events will be open to SPJ chapter members and other interested parties. Attendees are encouraged to bring along significant others, spouses, children and friends who can take part in one or more of the planned events or enjoy the beach and other Galveston attractions.
Attendees will be responsible for providing their own transportation to & from Galveston and between the three separate locations on the island. Total on-island travel distances less than 10 miles.
Participation in the lunch portion of the program is not required, however participants who do not take part in the lunch are asked to make a donation to help finance chapter programs in the upcoming year, including the 2014 Region 8 Conference next spring.
